The results of the International Convention on Marine Pollution in 1973 and 1978 were enshrined in MARPOL 73/78. Those rules were translated nationally into a “Ship’s Waste Decree” and locally into the “2008 Scheveningen Port Regulation.” Without bothering you further about the texts in all the regulations, the bottom line is that the Mercuur now complies with those rules in 2014 thanks to the Firm Qua-vac from Almere. The ship has now received a collection system for “black” (toilets) and “gray” water (showers, galley etc) and is connected with a hose to the sewer in the jetty. This significant improvement is thanks to Messrs. Cees Lam (who provided the materials on behalf of Qua-vac), Maikel de Meijer (who coordinated it all) and the trio in the photo (Elmar Buskens, René Bouthoorn and Johny Geraets) who carried out the entire installation. Not forgetting our own commander Willem van Kakerken who did most of the design and took care of the onboard preparation.
Finally, mention must also be made of John Hilberding of the Municipality of The Hague who took care of the shore connection. It was a great pleasure to have had this exceptionally motivated group on board and our thanks go to the firm Qua-vac who were willing to donate this in- stallation working.
