Lidl, Rotterdam

The Lidl supermarket on Teldersweg in Rotterdam in the Netherlands was built above an underground car park. Installing a traditional gravity-fed drainage system in the floor would therefore be complex, costly and time-consuming. For this reason, a vacuum condensate drainage system designed for supermarkets was chosen.

It was therefore decided to drain the condensate from all the refrigeration units in the shop via thin pipes, running along the ceiling to a single central point. There is no need to drill into the floor. The entire system can be easily modified and expanded (during the evening hours) so that the shop does not need to close.

The condensate from a refrigeration unit is collected in a Low Profile Buffer Box, a shallow tray placed beneath the unit. As soon as a certain level is reached, a valve opens and the condensate is extracted under vacuum via thin pipes to the vacuum unit located in the plant room. From there, the waste water flows by gravity into the sewer.

The vacuum is so strong that contaminants are even drawn out of the gravity flow section between the chiller and the buffer box. This reduces breakdowns, blockages and the need for cleaning services.
