Introduction

Agra is one of India’s most iconic cities, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and home to the world-famous 7th world wonder Taj Mahal. In order to maintain the sanity of the Yamuna River behind the Taj Mahal and its surroundings, it was necessary to implement a sewer system. The Vacuflow® vacuum sewer system proved to be the ideal choice for preventing environmental degradation of the Yamuna River.

The challenge

Agra is located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Rich in history and cultural heritage, it is one of the country’s most visited cities. The city is home to the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the world’s most celebrated monuments. Behind the Taj Mahal flows the Yamuna River, one of the longest rivers in northern India.

Why this project was needed:

  • To help prevent pollution of the Yamuna River and its surrounding environment
  • Conventional gravity sewers were not feasible due to the flat, low-lying terrain
  • The narrow streets around the Taj Mahal limited the use of traditional sewer infrastructure

To protect the Yamuna River and improve wastewater management in this sensitive heritage area, Qua-vac installed its Vacuflow® vacuum sewer system as part of the Agra Smart City programme.

The solution

Agra is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it one of India’s most important tourist destinations. As both the resident and tourist populations continued to grow, the need for an efficient and reliable wastewater system in the area became increasingly important.

In the low-lying area near the Taj Mahal, conventional gravity sewer systems were not feasible because the terrain lacks sufficient natural slope for wastewater to flow by gravity. Agra Smart City therefore selected Qua-vac’s Vacuflow® vacuum sewerage system as the most suitable solution. The system provides reliable wastewater collection while helping to protect the Yamuna River from environmental pollution. As a result, Agra became the first city in India to implement a public vacuum sewerage system.

Benefits of the Vacuflow® system:

  • Suitable for flat and low-lying areas where gravity sewers are not feasible
  • Requires shallow installation, reducing excavation work and disruption
  • Flexible pipe routing to avoid existing utilities and obstacles
  • Lower risk of leaks, as air enters the pipe instead of wastewater escaping if a pipe is damaged
  • Protects groundwater and surface water by minimizing infiltration and exfiltration
  • Uses smaller pipe diameters, reducing material and installation requirements
  • High flow velocities create a self-cleaning effect, reducing sediment build-up and blockages
  • Easier maintenance, as most mechanical components are located at the central vacuum station.
  • Well suited for densely populated and historic areas, with minimal disruption during installation
  • One central vacuum station can replace multiple pumping stations

The result

Around 500 households are connected to the vacuum sewerage system, with a single vacuum station serving the entire area. The vacuum mains were installed underground, and the use of smaller-diameter vacuum pipelines significantly reduced excavation, labour and material costs compared to conventional sewers. This resulted in lower overall installation costs while providing a reliable and environmentally friendly wastewater solution for this historic area.
