Introduction
Yew Point, developed by Hodson Bay Group, is a 145-acre eco resort on a secluded peninsula in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. The resort features architecturally designed, sustainably built cabins nestled within a protected conservation area. It offers a unique guest experience that combines unspoiled natural beauty with modern ecological design and low-carbon practices. To protect the surrounding environment while providing reliable wastewater collection, Qua-vac designed and supplied a Vacuflow® vacuum sewer system throughout the resort.
The challenge
Yew Point is a 59.7-hectare woodland and lakeside development bordering the environmentally sensitive Lough Ree area. Protecting this natural landscape was a key priority throughout the project’s design and construction.
A conventional gravity sewer system would have required deep trenches, extensive excavation, and significant disruption to the woodland environment. The project therefore required a wastewater collection and transportation solution that would minimize environmental impact while providing reliable performance across a large site with varying elevations.
The solution
As part of its low-impact infrastructure strategy, Yew Point selected the Vacuflow® vacuum sewer system.
Why the Vacuflow® vacuum sewer system was selected:
Minimal environmental impact
The vacuum sewer system requires shallower trenches, smaller-diameter pipelines, and significantly less excavation than a conventional gravity sewer system. This helps preserve tree roots, and minimizes disturbance to the surrounding landscape.
Protection of the natural landscape
Conservation of woodland, biodiversity, and sustainable construction methods are central to the Yew Point development. By reducing excavation and trenching, the Vacuflow® system supports these environmental objectives.
Ideal for the site’s topography
The cabins are spread across a large, low-density site with varying elevations. The vacuum sewer system efficiently transports wastewater without the need for numerous deep gravity sewers or multiple lift stations.
Fast and straighforward installation
The shallow installation depth shortens the construction period and minimizes disruption to the site.
Low energy consumption
The Vacuflow® system only requires power at the central vacuum station, resulting in low overall energy consumption and lower operating costs.
Easy maintenance
Its simple system design minimizes maintenance requirements and contributes to reliable long-term operation.
No above-ground breather pipes necessary
The system operates without above-ground breather pipes, preserving the natural appearance of the resort.
Sustainable, recyclable materials
The underground pipelines are manufactured from durable PE (polyethylene), a fully recyclable material that can be removed, recycled, and reused at the end of its service life, supporting circular construction principles.
In addition, the flexibility of the Vacuflow® system, combined with its small-diameter pipes and shallow trenches, makes it particularly suitable for environmentally sensitive locations such as coastal areas, nature reserves, and islands.
