Preventing environmental degradation of the Yamuna River in Agra, India

Agra is, because of its rich heritage, one of the most popular cities in India. In order to maintain the sanity of the Yamuna River, behind the famous Taj Mahal, and its surroundings it was necessary to implement a sewer system. A vacuum sewerage system proved to be the ideal choice for preventing environmental degradation.

Challenge

Agra is located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Its rich heritage and cultural significance make it one of the most popular cities in the country.  The Taj Mahal is one of the most iconic and majestic structures in Agra. Behind the Taj Mahal lies the Yamuna River, one of the longest rivers in North India. In order to maintain the sanity of the Yamuna River and its surroundings, Qua-vac installed a vacuum sewer system under Agra Smart City.

Solution

Agra is surrounded by UNESCO World Heritage, which adds to its historic and tourist value. As the population of both citizens and tourists continued to grow, the demand for an efficient and reliable solution became evident. A vacuum sewerage system proved to be the ideal choice for preventing environmental degradation of the Yamuna River. Moreover, the system offers the advantages of being low-cost and low-maintenance.

Result

The Vacuflow® system from Qua-vac was able to provide the solution for the challenges around the Yamuna River.  Around 500 households are now connected to a vacuum sewerage system, with one vacuum station serving the whole area. The mains were installed underground, and the use of vacuum piping resulted in significantly lower labour and material costs compared to gravity sewers. The cost advantages stem from the reduced labour and trenching expenses associated with smaller-diameter vacuum mains.
